Mad Dog Bicycles started as a small basement hobby.
Back in 1991 I dug out my old (1971) Schwinn Collegiate 5 speed
that was buried in my parents basement in Delmar NY. I thought
maybe it was time to see if I could make it ride again. Through
the help of a local bike shop in the Boston area, where I was
working at the time, I was able to revitalize the bike up to
practically like new condition. From that point on I was
hooked! I found myself visiting local thrift shops and
garage sales looking for my next project. Before I knew it, I had a
dozen bikes, rebuilt and taking up space. My interests gravitated
to older Schwinn bikes from my childhood years, the 1960'-early 1970's.
As it turned out, I was not the only one interested in these old
Schwinns. I found myself going to Bicycle specific swap
meets, and met other enthusiasts with similar obsessions.. I developed
a network of contacts to buy, sell, and trade parts with. My
hobby turned into a real passion. I was always (and still am )
looking for unusual vintage Schwinn bikes. Stingrays, Krates,
Manta Rays, Fastbacks, Corvettes, Jaguars and even older models like
The Black Phantom or Panther.
Along the path I found many other bicycles to good to be disposed of.
I started fixing them up in my spare time for friends and
neighbors. By 1993 I was back in Delmar and started the
annual all weekend Bicycle garage sale. The garage sale
lasted 13 years. Every year it got bigger. In the last few years
we were lining up over refurbished 100 bikes in the driveway. It
became a yearly event for many locals and neighbors and was tons of fun
! We were selling , trading and even buying used bicycles all
weekend. I found a little niche in the Delmar area selling used bikes.
In 2005 an opportunity arose to open a retail bike shop in the
former location Of the Eagles Nest Bike shop here in Delmar. I started
out selling just used bikes, but found I could not keep enough supply
in stock to last the season. Thats when I decided to get into new
bikes.
I researched several different brands and chose Jamis Bicycles. They
offer a full line of high quality Road bicycles, comfort bicycles, and
Mountain bicycles and youth models at reasonable prices.
I still have plenty of used bikes on hand and I am always looking for
more. My collection of older Schwinns is always evolving. Please
contact me if you have any vintage Schwinns, or even other brands if
you are looking to move along or restore.
Also, please feel free to stop by anytime... I always enjoy talking about bicycles !
